What is otoplasty?
Otoplasty reshapes the cartilage of the ear to correct its projection or shape when it protrudes more than usual. The incision is concealed in the natural crease behind the ear, so the scar is not visible from the front or in profile. The reshaped cartilage keeps its new form permanently.
Although often perceived as “minor” surgery, its impact is among the highest in facial surgery: prominent ears are a frequent source of discomfort from childhood on, and the correction — an outpatient procedure with a simple recovery — resolves it definitively.
Who is this surgery for?
For adults and adolescents with prominent, asymmetric or poorly folded ears. In adolescents each case is evaluated together with the family; the cartilage is sufficiently developed from an early age, so there is no reason to postpone the consultation if the discomfort exists.
Recovery
An elastic protective band is worn for the first days (and at night for a few weeks). Discomfort is moderate and manageable with common painkillers, and most patients return to their activities in under a week. Post-operative care details are explained at the evaluation.
